A Simple Model of Cruising for Garage Parking
نویسندگان
چکیده
Parking guidance systems have to be calibrated and evaluated before their application in the field. One step to accomplish this is to evaluate them in a simulated environment. This paper presents a simple model of cruising for parking in a parking garage with focus on individual drivers’ behavior. While the described model itself is too basic to completely depict a driver’s decision making process, it is a step towards a more comprehensive representation. In the process of developing the model it became clear which pieces are still missing from the puzzle, and what data has to be collected to successfully represent a parking garage’s operational day. After a short introduction this paper shares some background on garage parking and related work. A simple garage parking model is presented, followed by some thoughts on necessary steps to expand and refine the model. The paper concludes with a summary of the lessons learned and an outlook on further research.

Modeling Garage Parking
Described is a simulation model of cruising for garage parking, intended both for the calibration and evaluation of real-time parking recommendation methods, and as a base for predictive guidance to available parking. The model combines the event-based and agent-based simulation approaches to represent the parking garage and the driver behavior. It is validated by simulating a real-world parkin...
متن کاملCruising for Parking around a Circle
There has recently been considerable interest in cruising for curbside parking as a major contributor to traffic congestion in the downtown areas of major cities. The density of cars cruising for parking in the downtown area is related to the rate at which cars in transit in the downtown area start cruising for parking and the expected search time of a car that starts cruising for parking. This...
متن کاملUrban Vehicle Congestion Pricing: A Review
Drivers in urban neighborhoods who cruise streets, seeking inexpensive on-street parking create a significant fraction of measured traffic congestion. The solution to this problem is to reduce the total traffic volume including cruising traffic by implementing a congestion pricing scheme: the imposition of a usage fee on a limited-capacity resource during times of high demand. We review the his...
متن کاملThe price to park: Assessing the determinants of Garage prices and their interaction with curbside regulation
Curbside parking regulation has been widely implemented in cities around the world and increasingly they are adopting market-oriented perspectives. However, policy-makers face a complex task when they seek to foster efficiency in this market due to its intrinsic distortions (most notably, cruising in search of a parking space and garage market power). Theoretical studies stress that the right p...
متن کاملModeling and optimization of multimodal urban networks with limited parking and dynamic pricing
Cruising-for-parking constraints mobility in urban networks. Car-users may have to cruise for on-street parking before reaching their destinations. The accessibility and the cost of parking significantly influence people’s travel behavior (such as mode choice, or parking facility choice between on-street and garage). The cruising flow causes delays eventually to everyone, even users with destin...
